“Birds, snails, fish, mice, cats, geese, swans, newts, toads, moles, rabbits, voles, friends
and spectators: welcome to the first day of training for the Animal Races, a most important
day as we announce the chosen categories.“ Behind Warren stood a dozen or so of his helper
rabbits, also proud, but lacking Warren’s charisma and self-confidence somewhat.
“Without further ado, I would like to draw the first
card,” announced Warren. The rabbits had spent the
last two nights debating the events. Each time their
minds were made up an animal and category was written
on a large leaf from the Old Oak Tree, and wrapped up
into a small parcel. “This year,” he continued as he
opened up the first parcel, “the snails will be in the
cross field flying competition.”
